Press Brake Magnetic Squaring Arm: Setup and Left vs Right

Magnetic squaring arm with guide plate and angle reference

A magnetic squaring arm gives sheet metal a repeatable side reference to help control rotation during press brake setup. The backgauge establishes the depth reference; the arm helps establish orientation. Choose a compatible left- or right-hand arrangement, check the full movement envelope and verify the first part.

What the arm controls

Reference comparison
Reference Purpose How to verify it
Backgauge depth Sets the locating relationship used for flange dimensions Approved gauge calibration and first-piece measurement
Side datum Helps the blank maintain the intended orientation Known reference edge, square or measured setup
Bend-line cue Helps the operator see a planned line Calibrated visual aid or approved marking method
Safeguarding Protects against the machine hazards Validated machine safeguards and facility procedure

How magnetic mounting works

The base attaches to a suitable ferrous mounting surface and the guide provides a side datum. Inspect the seating surface and confirm the accessory’s instructions before use. Paint, dirt, contact geometry and a poor mounting location can prevent reliable seating.

The Tranyond magnetic squaring arm listing specifies 270 × 175 × 40 mm and 1.8 kg. Check those dimensions against the actual die, clamp, backgauge and moving part. The listing does not establish a universal holding-force or machine-compatibility rating.

Left or right: map the actual reference edge

Stand in the intended operator position and identify the blank’s reference edge. Choose the arrangement that provides usable space for that edge and the arm without obstructing the tool or part path. Mirrored parts may call for a mirrored arrangement, but confirm the supplier’s left/right designation before ordering.

  1. Mark the side datum on the part drawing.
  2. Show the proposed blank orientation and bend sequence.
  3. Check where the guide and magnetic base can be mounted.
  4. Review the ram, punch, clamps, backgauge and rising flange through the full cycle.
  5. Confirm that the guide can be removed or repositioned according to its instructions.

A practical setup sequence

  1. Put the machine into the safe state required by the manufacturer and facility before installing or adjusting the accessory.
  2. Clean the intended mounting surface and inspect the arm for damage.
  3. Seat the base and confirm it cannot obstruct moving components, safeguards or the part.
  4. Set the guide angle with a known reference or approved measurement method.
  5. Locate the blank with the approved backgauge and side datum without forcing it.
  6. Run the approved first-piece procedure with hands clear of the hazard area.
  7. Measure flange dimensions, angle and orientation; correct the setup using approved controls or adjustments.
  8. Record the arm arrangement, reference edge, position and inspection result.

When a side reference helps

An arm may help when a blank can yaw against a short backgauge contact, or when flange depth is acceptable but orientation varies. It cannot correct a poor reference edge, an incorrect program or inadequate support by itself.

If the part cannot remain supported while hands stay clear, revise the fixture, support, sequence or forming route. A side datum is not a safeguard, and magnetic mounting is not permission to place hands beside a moving punch.

Frequently asked questions

Can a squaring arm replace the backgauge?

It normally serves a different locating function. Use the approved depth reference and verify the dimensions; a side fence alone does not approve flange depth.

Does it work on every press brake die?

No universal fit should be assumed. Check the mounting surface, contact, clearance, part path and the accessory’s instructions.

How should I choose left or right?

Map the part’s side datum from the operator position and confirm the manufacturer’s designation. Choose the version that clears the actual tooling and part.

Is a squaring arm a safety device?

It is a positioning accessory. It does not replace guards, a safety-rated detection system or the machine’s approved safe procedure.

Should the angle be checked after repositioning?

Yes. Re-establish the reference and verify a first piece whenever the mounting, tooling or job setup changes.
